# How do I weigh fragrance oil?

A good idea when weighing fragrance oil is to use a percentage because you are guaranteed to always get the same results. Most waxes have a 10% maximum fragrance load or approximately 1.6 oz. per pound. A typical amount is about 6% or 1 ounce per pound. Be sure to check the product page for the wax you will be using to find out the maximum fragrance percentage that it can hold. You will see this listed under the properties section for easy reference.

To calculate your fragrance:

1.  Use a candle and soap scale for [weighing your fragrance oil](https://support.candlescience.com/en_us/should-i-weigh-or-measure-my-fragrance-oil-BJ3Q5HI0g).   
      
    
2.  Determine how much fragrance oil you'll need. Not sure how to get started? 3.  Place a small glass or waxed paper cup on the scale and "[tare](https://support.candlescience.com/en_us/how-do-i-tare-zero-out-the-scale-r1nhCOzCbg)" it so that the weight of the cup is removed. You should see 0.  
      
    
4.  Pour the amount of fragrance oil you'd like to use into the cup. Fragrance oil can react to some containers, so don't let the fragrance sit in the paper cup for more than a few seconds and be sure not to use any plastic containers unless the plastic is PET, HDPE, or PP.  
      
    
5.  When the wax reaches the recommended temperature of [180-185°F (](https://support.candlescience.com/en_us/what-temperature-should-i-add-fragrance-oil-to-melted-wax-HyR8S4UAZl)[82-88°C](https://support.candlescience.com/en_us/what-temperature-should-i-add-fragrance-oil-to-melted-wax-HyR8S4UAZl)[)](https://support.candlescience.com/en_us/what-temperature-should-i-add-fragrance-oil-to-melted-wax-HyR8S4UAZl), remove it from heat and add the fragrance. Stir gently and thoroughly.  
      
    
6.  That's it! You can pour the scented wax as soon as it reaches the [pouring temperature](https://support.candlescience.com/en_us/what-is-the-correct-pour-temperature-for-my-wax-HJTeU8fCWe) (the temperature at which you pour the fragranced wax into the container) for the wax you're using.
