We get a lot of questions about flashpoint but don't worry, it’s not generally a cause for concern.

## **What is flashpoint?**

  

The flashpoint is the temperature at which a fragrance oil or essential oil can combust if exposed to an open flame or spark. Adding fragrance oil or essential oil to wax above the oil's flashpoint will not cause it to combust. At room temperature, there is no cause for concern.

## **Do low flashpoint fragrances burn off?**

  
No. As long as the fragrance is added to wax and poured soon it will not lose strength. However, we do not recommend repeatedly cooling and reheating batches of fragranced wax. Limiting your batch size to an amount that can be poured right away is always better.

## **So why list flashpoint at all?**

  
We list flashpoint for two reasons:

*   For customers who make gel candles.
    *   Penreco recommends using fragrances with flashpoints over 170°F in their gel waxes. Please see their [safety recommendations](https://D3hvfybcx3z7iq.cloudfront.net/Candle%20gel%20safety%20Bulletin%202016.pdf "Penreco Candle Gel Safety Bulletin") when working with gel waxes.
*   We are unable to ship fragrances with low flashpoints via air.
    *   Fragrances that have a flashpoint of 141°F or less are unable to be shipped via USPS. They will have to be shipped via ground services. The good news is that all CandleScience fragrance oils have a flashpoint over 141°F so all of our fragrance oils can be shipped via USPS without restriction.
