What is phototoxicity? Which essential oils are phototoxic?

  • Updated

Phototoxicity describes increased sensitivity of the skin or eyes to sunlight or other forms of UV light. Some essential oils are phototoxic and should be avoided prior to sun exposure.

The main culprits of phototoxic reactions are citrus essential oils, like bergamot or lemon. We recommend reviewing the essential oil's SDS for guidance.
