Why do you charge sales tax?

  • Updated

In July of 2018, the state of South Dakota sued Wayfair, an e-commerce business, for non-payment of sales tax on online orders shipping to South Dakota. The case eventually reached the Supreme Court of the United States, our nation's highest court. Based on the court's decision, individual states can collect sales tax on purchases made from companies without a physical presence in the state.

Most states have elected to collect sales tax on orders shipped to their state. Each state has its own laws to determine when and how businesses must start collecting sales tax on orders that fall under this court decision. CandleScience collects sales tax on orders shipping to each state that requires us to do so.

For more information and frequently asked questions, please review our FAQ here. All tax exemption information is intended for US-based customers.

If you have a valid sales tax exemption and would like to submit your information to us, please follow the instructions in How do I become tax exempt at CandleScience?

If we do not have a valid tax exemption on file for your account, you will be charged sales tax if your order is shipped to any of the states in the list below.

If you have specific questions, we would recommend reaching out to the agency in charge of taxation for your state.
